Bobbi K Samples became an artist later in life, roughly 15 years ago. She took two lessons, and the rest was history! She ended up creating 85 paintings in her first year of painting.
In Samples’ words, “I couldn’t stop — since then, my style has evolved with me. That said, my husband says I now choreograph with my hands instead of my feet, which was from an earlier dance career.”
Bobbi’s “dance of paints” is a very specific performance, as she only paints with oil on gallery-wrapped canvas. Artistically, she believes that the sides of a painting should be a part of the creation itself. She hopes that the viewer can, in a way, anticipate her paintings merely by walking up to their side this way. In terms of process, Samples tends to start each painting with a large, flexible brush and then finishes with different sizes and shapes of palette knives. Her trade secret, she proudly claims, is utilizing her favorite knife to finish a piece (her husband’s putty knife from his toolbox!).
