The excitement of summer days is one of our family’s favorite times of the year. Now that the summer heat is in full swing, what better way to enjoy these summer memory making days than by beating the heat with summer fun around Fishers!
1. Creek Stomping
Is there anything more classic childhood summer fun than splashing and stomping in a creek? The best part of creek stomping is you can “stomp” practically anywhere in nature. Our family’s favorite places to stomp around Fishers include Flat Fork Creek Park, and Heritage Park. Though we love these locations after any good rainstorm, the possibilities are endless for where you can stomp. I recommend wearing “grippy” shoes like water shoes, rain boots, or old tennis shoes as well as bringing a towel and a change of clothes.
2. Take a Nature Walk
Though most think of water when trying to beat the heat but a walk amidst the shade of trees can be just as refreshing. Nature adventures are some of our family’s favorite ways to beat the summer heat. With numerous great nature areas and walking paths around the city, the options are endless. Our family loves exploring Ritchey Woods, Cheeney Creek Natural Area, and Flat Fork Creek Park. While out on a walk, there are many ways to keep cool. Be sure to pick a shady path, bring water to drink, and dress in light-colored loose-fitting clothing.
3. Geist Waterfront Park
What better way is there to enjoy summer than with a staycation at Fishers’ very own beach! Features of Geist Waterfront Park include a beach, playground, picnic shelters, walking trails, open green space, and a non-motorized boat launch for kayaks and paddle boards. Pack your lunch, sunscreen, and bathing suit for a day out on the reservoir! Parking and entry are free for Fishers Residents.
4. Splash Pads
Splash pads are a great way to cool down for kids of all ages as the summer temperatures rise. A water paradise with a variety of ways to play from buckets of dumping water to spraying rainbow sprinklers, and mini geysers are all combined with the bonus of usually being located next to the park’s playground and picnic table area making for the perfect summer retreat.
5. Cool Treats
Is there anything more refreshing on a hot day than a cold treat? Whether you’re in the mood for Italian ice, ice cream, or shaved ice they are all the prefect treat! Fishers has many perfect locations for a cold treat with a variety of choices sure to make everyone’s summer day memorable. Our family’s local favorites include Handel’s Ice Cream, Rita’s Italian Ice, Crave, and Kona Ice.
6. Indoor Fun at the Library
Although soaking in the sun is a summer favorite, retreating to the indoors is also a refreshing way to beat the heat. One of our favorite indoor activities is the library. Hamilton East Public Library has many resources for summer fun whether its participating in the summer reading program, using one of the many online tools, or getting your creative by participating in a virtual drop in activity.
